Theodore Roosevelt Visits Newport Naval Training Station in 1918, Previously Unpublished Snapshots
Photographs
A collection of previously unpublished vintage gelatin silver photographs depicting the visit of ex-president Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) to the Naval Training Station at Newport, Rhode Island, ca. October 17, 1918. The photographs are mounted and displayed in a vertical sectional gilded frame, the photo sections separated by Corinthian fluted pilasters in bas relief. Expected surface wear to the photographs including isolated wrinkles, loss, edge darkening, and slight edge curling. Not examined out of the frame. Minor loss, chipping, and retouching to the period frame. The paper backing verso has some pencil notations from a former collector. The approximate size of each photograph is 6.5" x 4.625" while the overall size of the frame is 8.5" x 22" x .5."

Former 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Naval Training Station at Newport, Rhode Island on October 17, 1918. Our photos top to bottom show Roosevelt at the reviewing stand standing next to station Commandant, Captain Edward H. Campbell; Roosevelt walking from the dock next to Captain Campbell; Roosevelt proceeding through the ranks of station personnel in blue dress; and Roosevelt arriving at the dock.

Contemporary newspaper accounts tell us that Roosevelt was whisked to and from the Naval Training Station on the speedboat "Shark." During the afternoon visit, Roosevelt's retinue included local and state politicians such as the sitting and former Governors of Rhode Island. Roosevelt was hailed by a 30-squad Blue Jacket Guard at Constellation Dock, and serenaded by the Naval Training Station Band. Roosevelt reviewed the entire brigade of the Training Station in procession and then gave a passionate anti-German address at Destroyer Hall.
