Signed as President! Presentation Statesman Edition of "The Naval War of 1812," Theodore Roosevelt's first book written when he was 23

THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919) Book Signed "Theodore Roosevelt" as President, on a bookplate affixed to the front pastedown of Volume II (also referred to inside as Part Two) of his two volume The Naval War of 1812, 299 pages, 5.5" x 8". Top gilt edged. Half red cloth with marbled cream colored boards. Lettering in gilt on spine. Statesman Edition. New York: The Review of Reviews Company, 1904. Very Good condition.

Bookplate, 3" x 4", depicting the Seal of Columbia University at top center. Text: "Presented to the / Roosevelt Library / in the / University of Berlin / by." Signature as President in ink "Theodore Roosevelt" scuffed partially on three letters.

Theodore Roosevelt had graduated from Harvard in 1880. While attending Columbia Law School, he continued his research on a book he had started while still at Harvard. He finished it in December 1881: his first book, The Naval War of 1812. In an article datelined Berlin, July 20 [1907], The New York Times reported on the visit of Prof. John W. Burgess, Dean of Columbia University, to Germany. In part, "As a souvenir of his visit he has established the Roosevelt Library at the University of Berlin, to which, it was announced this week, President Roosevelt has presented an autograph set of his own literary works…".
