Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 Western Tour Photo Archive by Underwood & Underwood
Photograph

Rare set of seven Underwood & Underwood photographs which document President Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 Western Tour, a historic transcontinental journey that marked the first time a sitting U.S. president traveled so extensively across the country. Produced by Underwood & Underwood, one of the most prominent news photography agencies of the early 20th century, these images vividly capture Roosevelt's speeches, parades, and symbolic visits across the American West. Locations are identified in handwritten notations on the backs and include stops in San Francisco (Presidio), Chattanooga (Tennessee), Mountain Home (Idaho), Canton (Ohio), Biddeford (Maine), and a memorable moment passing through a redwood tree in California. Overall fine condition. Some with stamps on verso, some toning and paper loss, but vivid images. See photos for details. Each photo measures approximately 8" x 10."

Visit to Municipal Factories (Photo 1) Roosevelt inspects workers and manufacturing conditions during a civic visit, likely tied to municipal reform efforts.

Presidio, San Francisco, California (Photo 2) President Roosevelt reviews cavalry troops on horseback at the Presidio, a key U.S. military outpost in San Francisco.

Chattanooga, Tennessee (Photo 3) A large indoor patriotic event or speech is shown, featuring Roosevelt under grand American flags and military decoration.

Driving Through a Tree, Big Trees Park, California (Photo 4) Roosevelt and companions ride a carriage through a tunnel carved into a giant sequoia at Big Trees Park - an iconic image of his conservation legacy.

Mountain Home, Idaho (Photo 5) President Roosevelt delivers a speech from the rear platform of his train to an assembled crowd in rural Idaho.

Canton, Ohio - Reviewing Parade (Photo 6) Roosevelt observes a large parade of uniformed men marching in formation through a festively decorated city street.

Biddeford, Maine (Photo 7) From the back of his train car, Roosevelt speaks to a crowd gathered with flags and banners in a classic whistle-stop appearance.
