Theodore Roosevelt PSA Signed "H.H. The Khedive of Egypt," Months After Post-Safari Cairo Layover Revealed TR's British Imperialist Sympathies
ANS

A 1p autograph note signed by former 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) as: "To / H.H. / The Khedive of Egypt / with the regards of / Theodore Roosevelt / Nov 1st 1910" near the top of what was once a dedicatory inscription in a book. November 1, 1910. N.p. Inscribed on watermarked paper, formerly the free endpaper of a book. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic. Expected wear including even minor to moderate foxing, and a small stain touching the left edge recto. Else very good to near fine. The page measures 6" x 9.75" and the slab measures 9.625" x 13.25." Provenance: Ex-Kenneth Rendell, 1969.

Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt had met Abbas II (1874-1944), the last Khedive of Egypt and Sudan, during a week-long visit to Cairo a few months earlier, in late March 1910. Roosevelt had just completed the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition (1909-1910) collecting animal, insect, and plant specimens in parts of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, British East Africa, and the Belgian Congo. TR sailed by steamship from Khartoum to Cairo up the Nile River, where he took the opportunity to see the Sphinx, pyramids, and other landmarks. Roosevelt gave several public speeches during his travels through Anglo-Egyptian Sudan that expressed sympathy with continued British rulership at the expense of Egyptian nationalism. In fact, police authorities greatly feared TR risked assassination in Cairo.

Knowing Roosevelt's political stance on latent Egyptian nationalism, it is unlikely that the Khedive of Egypt, who condemned the political role that the British played in the region, would have harbored the friendliest feelings towards Roosevelt. One wonders how this dedicatory inscription was received by him, five months after TR's visit to Cairo!
