Theodore Roosevelt Great Naval Letter & Archive

ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. Typed Letter Signed, “Theodore Roosevelt”, as President, 1p, on bifold White House stationery, 7” x 8.75”, Washington, October 19, 1903. Includes original White House mailing envelope, slit opened at right with expected soiling and wear. The letter has one center horizontal fold, creasing which is mostly limited to the right edge, overall age wear and toning, else near Fine condition.

Roosevelt writes to Rear Admiral R. B. Bradford at the Navy Department in Washington regarding the Admiral’s future plans. In full, “Your resignation as Chief of the Bureau of Equipment has been received and is accepted. I appreciate the motives which have led you to tender it. The desire as an officer of your rank, experience and ability for a command afloat pleases me, and I am glad to learn that it is the intention of the Secretary of the Navy to assign you to the command of the Battleship ILLINOIS. I was closely associated with you while I was Assistant Secretary of the Navy; I have watched your work closely since I have been President. As bureau chief you have shown signal zeal, ability and energy, as well as unswerving devotion to the public interests. You carry the same high qualities to your new station and I wish you abundant success therein.”

A copy of Bradford’s letter (unsigned) to President Roosevelt tendering his resignation is included, along with a small archive of correspondence from then Secretary of the Navy, William H. Moody. Also included is an invitation from President and Mrs. Roosevelt to a White House reception, with the original envelope and red “Special” admission ticket for the event

Royal Bird Bradford (1844-1914) was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, serving from 1865 until 1904. Bradford’s primary unit was Atlantic Fleet Division 3, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. He was Chief of the Bureau of Equipment from 1899 to 1903.

Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
