Accompanied by the albumin toned print, 9" x 6", depicting Roosevelt riding horseback alongside Capt. Fitzhugh Lee - both on horses appearing to be about to jump over a hedge. Roosevelt, as President,  pens a warm, jocular note to include with his outstanding picture of himself on horseback with the recipients father, General Fitzhugh Lee. Presented to Fitzhugh Lee's son who was a Captain (of the same name) 2 years after his father death :

"To Capt. Fitzhugh Lee,

With the regards of

Theodore Roosevelt

           in

The Master of Horse

Of the White House"

The two men, President Roosevelt and General Fitzhugh Lee were both involved in the Cuban war leading up to the destruction of The Maine. In fact Theodore Roosevelt, while in the Navy Department sought his resignation from that office to apply for a position on the staff of General Fitzhugh Lee. Roosevelt was wild to fight, while everyone around him thought he was going mad and doubted his sanity.

Nearly every major newspaper in the country urged Roosevelt to stay on in the Navy Department, where his services were now needed more than ever. Instead Roosevelt became chairman of the new Naval War Board, and  was responsible for putting into execution the war plan which he had argued before President McKinley the previous September. By early 1898 The Maine launched into position dropping anchor in Havana January 25, and within the month exploded by a placed mine killing hundreds.  Roosevelt had resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in May 1898 to join the volunteer cavalry commencing the start of the "Rough Riders" The Rough Riders were mostly made of college athletes,  cowboys, ranchers, miners, and other outdoorsmen. With these men being from southwestern ranch country, they were quite skilled in horsemanship, inclusive of Theodore Roosevelt as can be readily seen in this photo.
