Description:

Roosevelt Theodore

1p partly printed and partly handwritten document signed by then 33rd Governor of New York and future 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) as "Theodore Roosevelt" at bottom right. Bearing a red embossed Excelsior seal at left above the signature of Second Deputy Secretary of State of New York Horace G. Tennant. In good condition, the document laid on a cardboard mount. A repaired tear runs neatly between the "e" and "l" of Roosevelt's signature. With edge losses and water stains throughout. The document measures 11.75" x 16.875".

On May 19, 1900 at Albany, New York, Governor Theodore Roosevelt appointed Edwin D. Morgan (1854-1933) to one of three vacancies for state racing commissioner. Roosevelt also appointed fellow racing commissioners August Belmont and John Sanford on the same day. This five-year appointment obligated race commissioners to report earnings from both "running races" and "trotting races" to the state comptroller and legislature. Salaries ranged between $1,500 and $2,500 a year.

Edwin D. Morgan was the grandson of 21st Governor of New York, New York Senator, and Civil War Major General Edwin D. Morgan (1811-1883). A Harvard graduate, Edwin D. Morgan III made a fortune in utilities companies. He was also a passionate sportsman, serving as the Commodore of the New York Yachting Club between 1893-1894. He dominated the America's Cup scene during the early twentieth century.

Theodore Roosevelt served as Governor of New York between January 1, 1899 and December 31, 1900. Historians agree that his tenure as state governor informed much of his later presidential policy, notably in his management of trusts.
