In full:

"This will be presented to you by two friends of mine, Mr. Thomas C. Desmond, and Mr. Guy Emerson. They have long been my efficient helpers in the effort to get the United States into the war. If I am allowed to raise a division, Mr. Desmond will be a Major in the Engineers regiment [and Emerson would be with me if he found out that he could go]. I vouch for Mr. Desmond, and Mr. Emerson absolutely."

"P.S. I was very sorry you could not stay to take lunch with me."

In 1916, Roosevelt retired from politics, but was a strong advocate of the United States entering the First World War on the side of Britain and France. He openly criticized President Woodrow Wilson's policy of neutrality and actively campaigned for the war effort. All four of his sons went on to serve, and Roosevelt tragically losing his youngest son, Quentin, in combat during the war.

Sir Samuel Hughes (1853-1921) was the Canadian Minister of Militia and Defense during World War I.
