Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was an American novelist and journalist of the naturalist school. His works often featured main characters who succeeded at their objectives despite a lack of a firm moral code, as can be seen in his most famous novels "Sister Carrie" (1900) and "An American Tragedy" (1925). The plot of the latter was based on the notorious 1906 murder of Grace Brown and the subsequent trial of her lover, Chester Gillette. Dreiser notably saved newspaper clippings about the case for several years before writing his novel, during which time he studied the case closely.
