Description:

Pope Paul VI
n.p., December 11, 1976
The Vatican Book Signed by Pope Paul VI & Inscribed to Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.
Signed book

Pope Paul VI (1897-1978). Extra-large hardcover book "The Vatican and Christian Rome" inscribed to U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. "To Mr Ambassadeur Cabot Lodge with our best wishes" and signed "Paulus PP. VI - 11 December 1976" on the title page. The 522pp volume, 10.75" x 12.5", features color photographs and illustrations and was published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana (with ecclesiastical approval) in 1975. Title page and a few other areas show light, uneven foxing, wear to the dust jacket at corners and to the bottom corner of the front board, taped 5.25" tear to back of dust jacket, and a slightly creased foldout page within, else fine with a beautiful clear Papal signature.

Also included is a 7" x 9.5" black and white glossy photograph of Pope Paul VI standing beside Cabot Lodge, Jr. It is stamped on the verso "Copyright by Pontificia Fotografia Felici" with a Roman address and telephone number listed. Three photocopies of photos of the Pope, Cabot Lodge, Jr., and other guests from the same event are also included.

Pope Paul VI (born Giovanni Montini) led the Roman Catholic Church from 1963-1978. During his papacy, Paul VI implemented many internal reforms affecting the clergy and liturgy. He was also known for expanding the cult of Mary, and for his progressive outreach to Protestants and Eastern Orthodox Christians. Paul VI was canonized as Pope Saint in 2018.

Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. (1902-1985) was an American politician and diplomat. He served as Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador to South Vietnam, Ambassador-at-Large, and Ambassador to West Germany, as well as serving intermittently as the Ambassador to the Holy See throughout his long career, working under the administrations of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford.
