The "Quaker Soldier" and Friend of Washington Clement Biddle Legal Document, 1813
DS
Partly-printed, late document signed, two pages, 10 x 16 inches, Philadelphia, August 7, 1813. A court document transferring Power of Attorney to William Hoeting, who is representing three merchants. Signed very boldly twice at conclusion. Somewhat weakened and toned folds with show-through from seals, otherwise very good. Signed less than a year before his death.

This lot is accompanied by three letters written to Charles Biddle, dated Feb. 18, 1788, July 24, 1790 and Dec. 14, 1815, each with legal content from persons he represented.

Charles Biddle (1745-1821) was a merchant, sailor, and politician and the brother of Nicholas Biddle. During the Revolution, he was a member of the merchant service in North Carolina, where he met his wife, Hannah Shepherd. Later, he served as the Vice President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania during Benjamin Franklin's presidency of that body. A friend to Aaron Burr, the third Vice President of the United States under Thomas Jefferson, who dueled with Alexander Hamilton, letters from Burr to Biddle shortly after the duel are housed in the Andalusia archives.

Clement Biddle (1740-1814) was born in Philadelphia, was a member of the Society of Friends, and joined his father's shipping business. He married Mary Richardson in 1764, and they had one child who died at birth. He later married Rebekah Cornell, with whom he had thirteen children. In the 1760s, he organized the "Quaker Blues" as a volunteer militia unit. During the Revolutionary War, Biddle raised another regiment of Quakers and served as deputy quartermaster of the "flying camp," among the earliest volunteers. He fought in the Battles of Trenton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. He served as commissary general at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778. After resigning from the Continental Army in 1780, he became quartermaster general of the Pennsylvania troops. He enjoyed a close friendship with George Washington and handled Washington's business affairs in Philadelphia. After the Revolutionary War, he served as the first U.S. Marshal for Pennsylvania (1789-1793). After his term expired, he accompanied the Pennsylvania militia in 1794 to suppress the Whiskey Rebels in western Pennsylvania but held no other public offices for the remainder of his life.
