Description:

The Palestine Post, Nov. 30, 1947 - UN Approves Partition Plan, Civil War Breaks Out Same Day

4pp, measuring 16" x 23.5", Jerusalem, dated November 30, 1947. An issue of "The Palestine Post", Volume XXII, No. 6571, "Late Edition." The newspaper reports on the approval of the partition of Palestine by the United Nations, on the same day that civil war broke out between Jews and Palestinian Arabs. Headlines read: "Partition Approved By More Than 2/3: 33 Vote Yes. 13 No. 10 Abstain."; "2,000,000 Dollar Budget for Implementation"; and "Song and Dance Greet News." With advertisements throughout. The newspaper is encased in a plastic sleeve that makes us unable to view the inside articles of the paper - however the sleeve should be easy to remove upon purchase. With flattened folds, moderate toning, and hole punches at the right side. Overall very good.

Under the control of the British government, Palestine saw frequent clashes between Jewish Zionist nationalists and Palestinian Arab nationalists. With diplomacy failing, the United Nations voted on November 29, 1947, to recommend the adoption and implementation of the partition plan, which would create independent Arab and Jewish States. While the Jewish community was thrilled with the Resolution, the plan was strongly and violently protested by Arab communities throughout the country. The first casualties were five passengers riding a Jewish bus near Kfar Sirkin on November 30. The violence sparked an all-out civil war that would last until May 14, 1948, when it began a second phase as the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which lasted until March 10, 1949.
