"The Lincoln Family" Currier & Ives 1867 Lithograph
Poster
A handsome print of the classic Currier & Ives lithograph from 1867, showing the Lincoln family in a domestic tableau at a table, with sons Tad and Robert at Lincoln's right, while Mary Todd Lincoln looks on. It measures 13.5 x 9.5 in., matted to 14 x 20 in. overall and ready to frame. In very good condition with the expected even toning and a few foxed spots. Not examined out of mat.

As far as historians are aware, the Lincoln family never sat for an official, complete family portrait. Nevertheless, artists such created their own imagined family scenes, using individual portraits of family members to capture each subject's likeness. The Lincolns' second son, Edward died in 1850 at the age of 4 and Willie, the third son, at the age of eleven in 1862, an event that devastated the Lincoln family. Sadly, Tad would also die young, succumbing to pneumonia at age 18 in 1871. Robert Lincoln was the only child to live a long and full life; he studied law at Harvard, was commissioned as a captain in Grant's army, served as Secretary of War for President Garfield, and later owned his own law firm. Mary Todd Lincoln never fully recovered from the death of her husband and three sons and fell into a deep depression. At times she exhibited alarming and erratic behavior, and for a period in 1875, she was committed to a private asylum. She passed away at the age of 63 in 1882.
