Read, George (1733-1798) The earliest George Read signature we've encountered

Autograph Endorsement Signed, "Geoge Read Clkto Mr. Moland." 1 page, 6.5" x 7.75", Philadelphia, December 3, 1752, accomplished on the docket of a leaf that once contained a legal document concerning the case of Melchior Shultze & Adam Wink. Folds, with a few minor partial separations, light soiling, else very good condition.

The endorsement, written by a nineteen-year-old Read, reads in full: "Please to Issue the above & You'll Oblige Your very Humble Servt. George Read Clk to Mr. Moland." After studying at Francis Allerton's Academy in New London, Read read law under John Moland in Philadelphia, for whom he also worked a clerk. Read was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar the following year.

This is the earliest example of Read's hand we have ever seen appear on the market.
