Description:

Texas - Texas Navy! after the 1836 battle of San Jacinto and the capture of the Texan Schooner 'Invincible'.

Bifold letter, 7.75" x 9.75" heavily scripted on three sides, address leaf with a circular Pensacola, Florida postmark on the final page with additional notes, and the red wax seal. Dated "May 3, 1836". Overall toned. Professional repairs to separations along the fold lines. Several pin holes of paper loss with one small one inch piece missing along right edge affecting some text. Very good. Ex-Burger Collection.

Texas manuscript, James F. Miller of the U.S. Navy on the "U.S.S. Warren" writes a 4 page letter to his sister, Catherine Miller of Salem, Massachusetts. The writer was the son of General James Miller of Salem, a noted army officer during the War of 1812 and hero of the Battle of Lundy's Lane. He writes his opinions of Captain Wm. V. Taylor, Cap't Samuel DuPont, and discourses at length upon his expectation of being promoted to Lieutenant. He gives a lengthy description of the capture of the "Texian Schooner Invincible", armed with six guns and one long 18. "The Invincible" had recently taken an American vessel for its cargo and was seen near the mouth of the Mississippi. "Officers and men volunteered cutlasses, pistols, tomahawks, boarding pikes ... at sunset she attempted to get under weight ... 3 boats armed to the teeth, 55 men, six officers shoved off in silence ..."

A closely written four page letter written less than 2 weeks after the battle of San Jacinto when Texas independence was established. Texas was then still a provisional government.

Provenance: William J. Burger collection.
