Pendleton Murrah
Austin, TX, April 31, 1864
Texas Gov. Pendelton Murrah Endorsed Letter from Wife Seeking Safe Passage to Join Husband
AES
A Civil War-dated endorsed letter by Texas governor Pendleton Murrah. 1 sheet (front and back), measuring 7.5" x 9.75", Austin, dated April 31, 1864. The original letter was addressed to Murrah by Mary J. Hamilton, who writes for assistance in procuring her safe transit for her and her family to join her husband in Matagorda Bay. Interestingly, Mrs. Hamilton also mentions that she wishes to also secure passage for the wife of a Lt. Colonel in the Federal Army, Jesse Stancel. Endorsed and signed "P. Murrah" on verso. The letter has flattened folds with light toning throughout. Slightly rough edge. Boldly signed, very good overall.

Murrah's endorsement on verso reads:
"Respectfully referred to Maj: Genl. Magruder with the request that if he deem it consistent with the interest of the service, and the country, that the within request be granted. The passport referred to, I understand, has been granted by you."

Pendleton Murrah (1824-1865) was the tenth Governor of Texas, serving from November 1863 to June 1865. As governor, he strongly supported the Confederate cause, although he became embroiled in a controversy over the conscription of Texas militia troops into the Confederate Army. Despite the controversy, even after Robert E. Lee surrendered in 1865, he encouraged Texans to continue the fight. Upon learning that Union Army forces were en route to Texas, Murrah fled to Mexico with several other Confederate leaders. The trip to Mexico, however, took a toll on Murrah's health (it is believed he had tuberculosis), and he died in Mexico on August 4, 1865.
