Description:

Temperance Pearce & Husband Sell Land to Her Quaker Brother, 1725, Fascinating

1p, measuring 12.75" x 10", Little Compton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, dated May 1, 1725. An early Massachusetts land deed signed by Temperance Pearce and with the mark of her husband Gorge Pearce, certifying the receipt of £100 paid to them by Robert Kerbie of Dartmouth for a dwelling house and parcel of land in Dartmouth, containing 15 acres. The land was situated next to land owned by Robert Griffird, Joseph Allen, and James Tripp, as well as the homestead and land already owned by Kerbie. The deed has been countersigned by Silvester Richmond as Justice of the Peace, dated May 7, 1725. Two red wax seals next to Temperance's signature and Gorge's mark. With flattened folds, small separations, and a few small holes. Toning, staining, and faint soiling throughout. Slightly uneven edges. Overall very good.

Temperance Pearce, formerly Kirby (1670-1761) was the sister of Robert Kirby, spelled "Kerbie" in this document. She married George Pearce, a blacksmith and widower eight years her senior, on March 22, 1720. George had five children from a previous marriage, and it is unknown if he and Temperance had any additional offspring. Robert Kirby (1673-1757) was a Quaker and lived in Dartmouth, which would later become the town of Westport, near the Coaxit, or Niquechuck, River. Dartmouth records state that he received 212 acres of land in 1712 for a homestead on the east side of the Coaxit River.
