Description:

Teddy Roosevelt Signed Post Office Appointment

An administrative appointment signed by 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), as "Theodore Roosevelt" at lower right. Issued from Washington, D.C. on June 30, 1906. Partly handwritten and partly printed on parchment. Also co-signed by U.S. Postmaster General George B. Cortelyou (1862-1940), as "Geo. B. Cortelyou" at lower center. A gold foil "Post Office Department" seal is found in the lower left corner. Stylishly matted and framed behind glass in a burl walnut veneer frame. Not examined out of the frame. Expected surface wear to the mount including isolated wrinkles, stray marks, and a few smudges. Isolated surface wear to the frame, else near fine. Roosevelt's large, bold signature measures 5.375" x .5" alone. The overall frame size is 29.125" x 23.875" x 1."

President Theodore Roosevelt appointed James W. Mills (1865-1914?) to the position of Postmaster at Versailles, Missouri. Versailles is the county seat of Morgan County in central Missouri, approximately equidistant between Kansas City to the west and St. Louis to the east. Congressional records allow us to reconstruct Mills's professional career; he served as Postmaster of Versailles from at least June 1897 through June 1910, receiving an annual salary of $1,400 in 1901, with access to incremental raises.

Theodore Roosevelt served as president between September 1901 and March 1909. George B. Cortelyou was one of five U.S. Postmaster Generals either inherited or appointed by Roosevelt during his presidential tenure, with each Postmaster averaging about 2 years in the position. Cortelyou was no exception; he served as U.S. Postmaster General between March 1905 and January 1907.
