Teddy Roosevelt Only Two Days before He Would Resign His Post as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to Volunteer for Military Service in Cuba Leading the Rough Riders, He Comments on Dewey's Recent Victory at the Battle of Manila Bay!

Typed Letter Signed, "Theodore Roosevelt," as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, 1 page, 8" x 10.5" on Navy Department letterhead, Washington, May 4, 1898, to James H. Eckels of the Commercial National Bank in Chicago. Docked in pencil on verso. Two file holes at top, expected folds, very light soiling, else fine.

"I thank you heartily for your kindness. Didn't Dewey do well? I will have all the documents I can get sent to you."

Although Dewey's official dispatches announcing his victory over the Spaniards at Manila Bay did not reach Washington until May 7, 1898, there were enough unofficial reports in circulation to confirm it for some time.

Two days later, on May 6, 1898, Roosevelt would resign as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to form the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, better known as The Rough Riders.
