Description:

Roosevelt Theodore

Teddy Roosevelt Fantastic Family Book Passed on to his Son!

A handsome two volume set of Edward A. Freeman's The Reign of William Rufus and the Ascension of Henry the First (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1882) twice signed in an unknown hand, possibly that of President Teddy Roosevelt's son or daughter-in-law. Pencil signed as "Theodore Roosevelt" at the top of the full title page of the first volume, and as "Theodore" on the front end paper of the second volume. From the personal library of 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919). Both volumes also bear the original book plates of President Theodore Roosevelt, as well as the shared bookplate of his eldest son Theodore Roosevelt III (1887-1944) and daughter-in-law Eleanor Butler.

The signatures in each of the volumes, as well as the existence of two multigenerational bookplates, testifies to a chain of ownership and custody whereby the President gave the volumes to his eldest son. Teddy Roosevelt's bookplate incorporates the family crest depicting three roses as well as the family motto "Qui Plantavit Curabit" [trans: "He who will plant will cultivate"]. Eldest son Ted and wife Eleanor had a shared bookplate, reading "Theodore / Roosevelt Jr. / Eleanor Butler / Roosevelt / Their Book."

The books have burgundy cloth covers with gilt embossed spines. Expected surface wear to corners and edges. Intact but slightly weakened binding. Isolated foxing, closed tears, or a few wrinkles found scattered throughout, else very good to near fine. A few pages in the second volume are uncut. Nice clean pages. 8.5" x 5.75" x 2.25". 8vo. 1,356 combined pages.

Freeman's comprehensive history focuses on the reign of William Rufus (also called William the Red or William II), and that of his successor, younger brother Henry I. Events in the book take place in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Normandy, and western France during the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, some 30 years after the Battle of Hastings. The meticulously researched book includes copious footnotes and endnotes in original source languages including Latin, Saxon, French, and Greek. Its dense scholarship is relieved by the inclusion of margin summaries and a detailed chronology. Featuring about half a dozen Edward Fuller maps, including one fold-out, showing cities and regions. With numerous appendices and an index.

Teddy Roosevelt was a true intellectual in that he was sincerely interested in and extremely well-versed about a variety of subjects, history being one of the foremost among them. However, Roosevelt might have been especially intrigued by this medieval history because Henry I of England (ca. 1068-1135) was his 23rd great-grandfather. Thus, by extension, one of America's most beloved presidents was related to William the Conqueror!
