Description:

Teddy Roosevelt Boldly Signed Naval Appointment For Annapolis Cadet

A 1p document boldly signed by sitting 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), as "Theodore Roosevelt" near center-right. Issued from Washington, D.C. on May 7, 1902. Also countersigned by U.S. Secretary of the Navy William Henry Moody (1853-1917), as "William H. Moody" near center left. Partly printed and partly manuscript on vellum. Docketed by Registrar E.W. Callahan at lower left, and bearing a blue embossed "United States of America / Navy Department" seal at center bottom. Expected wear commensurate with age including wrinkles and isolated discoloration, else near fine. 15.75" x 19.75."

Theodore Roosevelt promoted Charles B. Hatch, Jr., a cadet at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, to the rank of "Ensign in the Navy" effective January 28, 1901.

Hatch, from Illinois, can be found in the 1898 register listing 55 members of the "Second Class" of naval cadets on probation at the Naval Academy at Annapolis; Hatch and his classmates had been admitted between May and September 1895. Overall, Hatch was a poor student, but he did exhibit flashes of talent. He is ranked 51 of 53 classmates in the Annual Register of the U.S. Naval Academy report of 1899-1900, based on an aggregate score of all four years. Hatch received his best marks in Modern Languages and Cruise Reports. Hatch and his classmates would have attended Annapolis during the Spanish-American War, and might have seen the tail end of the Philippine-American War. The historical records do not indicate that Hatch pursued his naval career past this promotion.

Theodore Roosevelt served as president between the September 1901 shooting death of his predecessor William McKinley, and March 1909.

William H. Moody served as Secretary of the Navy from May 1902 to June 1904. Previously, Moody was a U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts. After his tenure as a Roosevelt cabinet member, Moody acted as U.S. Attorney General and sat as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
