[Los Angeles, California.] Check No. A 111 directed the cashier of the Citizens National Trust & Savings Bank of Los Angeles to pay $66.95 to J.W. Robinson Co., a local department store. Edgar Rice Burroughs had published "Tarzan of the Apes" in the New York City-based pulp magazine "The All-Story" in October 1912. The "Tarzan" series would prove to be Burroughs's most popular and lucrative literary creation, resulting in 24 books. Readers were introduced to Tarzan, a British infant orphaned in equatorial Africa and raised by friendly apes. As a young man, Tarzan fights hostile animals, encounters his first Europeans, and falls in love with Jane Porter. Along the way, in true Burroughs fashion, characters are barraged by shipwrecks, kidnapping, and duels. Tarzan's adventures were to continue for the next 35 years!

2. A card signed and inscribed by Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984), the Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer and prolific Hollywood and television actor, as "To / Bill / Johnny / Tarzan / Weissmuller" at center. N.d., n.p. Mounting traces verso, else near fine. 5.375" x 3.875." Also accompanied by a black and white portrait of Weissmuller as Tarzan, 2.75" x 3.5."

Tarzan was Johnny Weissmuller's most famous acting role. Weissmuller played Tarzan in 12 films from 1932-1948, and also portrayed Jungle Jim, a similar adventure character, in 16 films and a one-season television series, from 1948-1956.
