Burroughs Edgar

Tarzan Author Edgar Rice Burroughs Writes to his Daughter, Joan, from Hawaii While Working as a War Correspondent: "I want to live long enough to see all you children again."

Typed Letter Signed "Papa" in blue pencil on his personal letterhead, one page, 8.5" x 11", Honolulu, November 11,1943 to his daughter Joan Burroughs Pierce (1908 - 1972). Usual folds, else fine condition.

Burroughs writes, "enclosing modest Christmas remembrances for the children [not present. If you see Jack, tell him that I received that booklet he sent me that I wrote him recently I had not received. It is bully. / Had supper with Phil Bird yesterday at the officers mess of the outfit to which he is attached. He is still hoping for a letter from you. / Now things seem to be moving faster in the Pacific, maybe the war will be over sooner than I had expected. I hope so. I want to live long enough to see all you children again. Lots of love! / (signed) Papa."

At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Burroughs had become a resident of Hawaii. Despite his advanced age, he applied to become a war correspondent. The request was granted, and Burroughs became the oldest war correspondent for the U.S. during the Second World War. In 1945 he moved back to California but died only five years later after suffering from poor health.
