Thomas Hart Benton the politician was a paternal ancestor and namesake of twentieth-century painter Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975). The elder Benton served as U.S. Senator representing Missouri from 1821-1851, and as a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri's 1st district between 1853 and 1855. A lifelong Democrat, Benton lobbied for Western expansion and the restriction of slavery.

Benton's correspondent was almost certainly William Hunter, Jr. (1774-1849), a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island from 1811-1821 who later served as the 1st U.S. Minister to Brazil during the Tyler administration.
