Description:

T. Wolfe Signed 1st Ed. "Of Time and The River"

A first edition first printing of Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938), "Of Time and The River" (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935), with the front loose endpaper signed and inscribed by Wolfe as: "For / Marion Ives / Sincerely, with best wishes / Thomas Wolfe / March 1, 1935." A piece of gauze protects the inscription. With both the "A" and the Scribner's seal on the copyright page. In dark blue covers with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. With a remarkably well-preserved original dust jacket showing the price stamp of $3.00 on the left flap, unclipped. 6" x 8.5" x 2." 8vo. 912pp. Extra documentation is included in the form of a double-sided photo insert removed from another book, possibly a Wolfe biography, showing vintage photos of the author.

The book was deaccessioned from the Westminster Towers Library: it is twice stamped "Westminster Towers Library," once on the front loose endpaper above Wolfe's signature and inscription; and once on the back pastedown endpaper. Remnants from the adhered library call number label can be detected on the spine, and there is a library card envelope found on the half-title page. Expected wear including light, mostly even toning within. Minor bumping to the hardcover edges, corners, spine extreme, and headband. The dust jacket shows expected wear including wrinkling and negligible chipping, else near fine, being protected by Mylar.

Wolfe dedicated this volume to Marion Ives, a preeminent New York literary agent later associated with Random House Publishing.

Thomas Wolfe was heralded by contemporaries during his lifetime as one of the most talented American writers of the early twentieth century. His short stories, novellas, and novels inspired the Beatniks and modern American authors.

Similar first edition copies of this title, signed and dedicated by Wolfe during the year of publication, 1935, range between $2,500-$3,350 on Biblio.com.
