T. Roosevelt, Taft & 190+ Notables Sign "Canadian Club Of New York" Autograph Album! T.R. Praises Canada for "her share in the war." Highlights US & Canada Relations!
Album

A remarkable cloth-bound autograph album, entitled "Canadian Club of New York" containing nearly 200 signed letters and notes addressed to Thomas D. Neelands, President of the Canadian Club of New York. The album bears moderate wear, with some letters having expected handling. All boldly signed. The book measures 9.75" x 12.5" x 2."

The book spans from 1914 to 1919, and is highlighted by letters from Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, performing artists, public figures, foreign allied force delegations and politicians, and countless other top business and political leaders of the time. The letters, carefully tipped in at the corners, could be easily removed and sold individually, are typed or handwritten and display a range of letterhead types!

Worth highlighting is a fantastic content rich typed letter signed by Theodore Roosevelt, on stationery from The Metropolitan Magazine. Dated January 18, 1917, just before the United States entered World War I, Theodore Roosevelt notes that he is unaware The New York Times had misquoted him, as he rarely reads the paper, and praises the valor of Allied nations already at war—including Canada, during a time when Roosevelt was vocally advocating for American intervention.

Notable signers in the collection include President Theodore Roosevelt, President William Howard Taft, who signs as Chairman of the National War Labor Board; Elihu Root, in two typed letters on law firm letterhead; Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden, Henry Cabot Lodge, on U.S. Senate stationery; Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., in two typed letters; John D. Rockefeller Jr., expressing appreciation for Canadian women's contributions during the war; George Washington Goethals, on Panama Railroad Company letterhead; and George Dewey, as Admiral of the Navy. The album also includes prominent figures such as Henry L. Stimson, Horace Porter, Civil War veteran and diplomat under President Grant, U.S. Secretary of War; Oscar Straus, politician and U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire; Leonard Wood, military commander and Governor of the Philippines; Charles S. Whitman, Governor of New York; George W. Wickersham, U.S. Attorney General; Alton B. Parker, presidential candidate and jurist; Jacob H. Schiff, influential banker and philanthropist; Carr Van Anda, editor of The New York Times and over 170 additional signers worthy of further exploration. Together, their correspondence paints a vivid portrait of the political, military, financial, and journalistic leadership that shaped North America in the World War I era and highlights the significance of US and Canada relations at a pivotal time. The fourth slide vividly captures the sheer volume of signatures in this remarkable collection.

This scrapbook originates from the personal collection of Thomas D. Neelands, a key figure in New York's Canadian community and long-serving President of the Canadian Club of New York.

The Canadian Club of New York, founded by entrepreneur Erastus Wiman in 1885, worked to improve U.S.-Canada relations, especially with respect to trade. The Club was at different points engaged in lobbying (e.g., against U.S. trade tariffs or, most controversially, in favor of Canadian independence from the U.K.), but after the first World War it was primarily concerned with philanthropy and organizing social events. In 2005, the Club merged with another group to become Canadian Association of New York Incorporated.
