Stereoviews, also known as stereographs or stereoscopic images, were a popular form of entertainment and education in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These dual images, mounted side by side on cards, create a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope, an optical device designed to present each image to the corresponding eye, mimicking human binocular vision. Stereoviews contributed significantly to the development of photography by democratizing the experience of viewing distant places, historical events, and notable figures, making them accessible to the general public. They played a crucial role in early visual culture, offering immersive glimpses into various aspects of life and the world during a time when travel and firsthand experiences were limited. The widespread popularity of stereoviews also spurred advancements in photographic techniques and production, leading to higher quality images and innovations that would influence modern photography.
