T. Roosevelt at the McKinley Dedication! Fantastic Original Photos from Underwood & Underwood Archives
Photograph
A collection of ten original photographs, from the famous Underwood & Underwood archives, taken in 1907 at the dedication ceremonies of the McKinley Memorial in Canton, Ohio. The dedication was presided over by President Theodore Roosevelt, who assumed the presidency following the assassination of William McKinley in September 1901. The original photographs are mounted on their original Underwood & Underwood filing system cards, complete with the company's archival numbering and captioning annotations, preserving their authentic historical context. Most of the photographs are uniquely mounted on the front and back of the same archival cards and remain in very good condition overall, with minor chipping to the edges of the paper stock. Each photo measures 3.75" x 4.5" and is mounted to an overall size of approximately 6.25" x 4.5."

A brief search reveals that the only known examples of photographs from this historic day are preserved in the collections of the Library of Congress and the Theodore Roosevelt Center.

The dedication of the McKinley National Memorial in 1907 stands as a poignant tribute to the legacy of President William McKinley, with President Theodore Roosevelt leading the ceremonies. Highlighted among the images is President Theodore Roosevelt delivering his address in front of the McKinley National Memorial, surrounded by a vast audience and patriotic decorations, exemplifying the solemnity of the event. Another photograph captures Roosevelt standing at the podium, commanding the attention of the crowd as he pays tribute to his predecessor with his powerful oratory. In a particularly striking moment, Roosevelt leans forward while addressing a captivated audience seated in neat rows across the hillside, emphasizing the scale and significance of the gathering. These photographs beautifully illustrate the grandeur and importance of the dedication ceremony, with Roosevelt at the center of this historic tribute to President McKinley.

The assassination of President William McKinley on September 6, 1901, marked a tragic and pivotal moment in American history. McKinley was shot twice at close range by anarchist Leon Czolgosz while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Despite initial hopes for his recovery, McKinley succumbed to his wounds eight days later on September 14, 1901, due to gangrene caused by the bullets. His death stunned the nation, as McKinley was a beloved leader known for his steady hand during the Spanish-American War and his commitment to economic stability and modernization. The assassination propelled Vice President Theodore Roosevelt into the presidency, marking the beginning of a new era in American politics and reform, while leaving an indelible scar on the country's collective memory.
