Description:

Theodore Roosevelt
New York, NY, ca. 1912
T. Roosevelt 1912 Campaign Booklet, "Attitude of the Progressive Party Toward the Colored Race"
Pamphlet/Booklet

A campaign booklet addressing the "negro question" and the Progressive Party's views towards African Americans. New York: Stoddard-Sutherland Press, 1912. 16pp. The booklet consists of three sections, including Theodore Roosevelt's "Reply to a Query at the Progressive National Convention," a letter he wrote to Julian LaRose Harris (1874-1963), and a statement from the African American delegates to the National Progressive Convention. Exhibits light page toning and scattered soiling throughout. Minor staining present from staple binding. Otherwise, very good.

At times lauded for his liberal views on race relations, Roosevelt generally felt that equality for black Americans would come through progress from one generation to the next. However, he and his fellow Progressives of the era still maintained an overall condescending and paternalistic view of the black community. As president, his policies were often contradictory, from having dinner with Booker T. Washington at the White House to the dishonorable discharge of 167 African American soldiers following the Brownsville incident of 1906.
