T. Pickering, Final Military Operations of the Rev. War From West Point!
Document

Timothy Pickering's Accounting Ledger, No. 265, 4pp front and back with only the front side filled in, West Point, New York, dated September 30, 1783, and detailing forage payments made by Colonel Timothy Pickering, Quartermaster General of the Continental Army, for the month of June 1783. The ledger lists disbursements for forage due to officers stationed at or near West Point, including high-ranking figures such as Brig. Gen. John Paterson, Col. Sprout, and Major Gibbs. Written in a neat hand, the single-page document itemizes payments over several dates, from June 27 to August 15, noting the ranks, regiments, and number of months for which forage was owed. In fine condition with some toning. The document measures 8" x 12.5."

As Quartermaster General, Timothy Pickering was responsible for provisioning the Continental Army during a critical transitional period. Although the major combat of the Revolutionary War had ended with the surrender at Yorktown in 1781, formal peace was not secured until the Treaty of Paris was signed in September 1783. During this time, the army remained garrisoned, particularly at West Point, a strategic Hudson River fortification.

This ledger reflects the final administrative and logistical operations of the Continental Army, including the routine but vital task of compensating officers for forage—food and care for their horses. Among those paid are staff and field officers from multiple regiments, including quartermasters, adjutants, and medical staff, all of whom played a crucial role in maintaining the readiness and morale of the army during its demobilization phase.
