Description:

T. Herzl Requests Zion Chapters to Increase Circulation of "Die Welt"

Marked Circular 2, signed "Herzl", and addressed to a colleague. Written in German, the letter directs the recipient to forward a detailed list of Zionist organizations in their area in order for future vital issues of "Die Welt" to reach as many members as possible. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 10.5", Vienna (Wein), dated January 8, 1902. Countersigned at the bottom by a Secretary. With flattened folds and a minor area of paper loss at the left edge - affecting no text. Neat and clear signature. Very good.

A loose translation in full:
"The closer Actions committee has just met to resume work and urges you to carry out the constitution of work in your country as quickly as possible. We will send you information in the next few days about the first steps that the closer A. C. has taken in implementing the Congress resolutions. Now we ask you to send us a detailed list of the clubs or organized groups in your district because after the Congress of each such body we will have the party organ "Die Welt' sent immediately. There are reports and clarifications about the important work of the Congress which will appear in the 'Welt' in particular in the next issues, and it is in the absolute interest of the whole movement that this information also reaches the clubs.

There is probably no need for a detailed explanation of how important it is for our entire movement to provide this intelligence service. In particular, we would like to initiate correspondence between the associations themselves, so that, for example, an association in Argentina or in the Transvaal that is looking for a person or wants to get in touch with Zionist interested parties in other parts of the world, has a gathering point in the 'world' where he is sure to bring his communications to the attention of all like-minded people. We ask you to give this suggestion your full attention the and draw Welt" to be sent immediately. Sincerely yours with Zion's greeting"

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish lawyer, writer, and political activist who became the father of modern political Zionism. Herzl formed the Zionist Organization and promoted Jewish immigration to Palestine in an effort to form a Jewish state. "Die Welt" ("The World") was a weekly newspaper founded by Herzl in 1897 to promote Zionism. From 1897 to 1914 it was the principal paper for the Zionist movement and circulated between 3,000 to 10,000 copies throughout Vienna.
