T. Hart Benton (5) Photos Painting Mural for Truman Library, w/ 8 Candid Transparencies
Archive
An interesting archive of photographs and transparencies relating to artist Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975), including a series of candid images painting a mural for the Truman Library as well as several images on color film depicting the artist with his family. Totaling 12 items in all, with material ranging in date from 1946 to 1961. Exhibits varying degrees of light age toning, surface creasing, and minor curling to edges. Otherwise good condition.

The lot includes:

- 5 black and white photographs depicting Benton painting a mural entitled "Independence and the Opening of the West", ca. 1961. The painting was commissioned by David Lloyd, executive director of the Harry S. Truman Library, and depicts Independence and its people throughout the course of three decades, from 1817-1847. All measuring 8" x 10".

- 8 photographic transparencies depicting Benton and his family, including several winter/holiday scenes and stills of unidentified artworks. Each measuring approximately 2.375" square.

- Together with a bonus menu produced by Fred Harvey featuring Benton's "Rice Threshing" on front cover, dated November 24, 1946.

Thomas Hart Benton was an American painter, muralist, and printmaker who, at the height of his career, was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement. His works are characterized by fluid, sculpted figures, often depicted as everyday workers or farmers. Indeed, much of his work is strongly associated with the Midwestern United States, therefore making the Truman Library's commission of his mural an apt one.
