"In Cold Blood" remains one of Capote's best-known works, in part because it debuted a new type of literary sub-genre that he termed a "non-fiction novel." Capote based his book on the real-life murder case of the rural Kansas Clutter family by two drifters, Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock, in November 1959. Capote approached the contemporary murder investigation like a journalist: interviewing witnesses and law enforcement; gathering facts and contextualizing the crime within the community. Yet Capote's retelling of the narrative is much more engaging than straight reporting. He presents the story imaginatively, using ample description, employing dialogue, and even speculating about the convicted murderers' motivations and inner thoughts. This mode of writing was not without problems. Some of Capote's critics accused him of prioritizing creative license over veracity.

Signed first editions of this title range between $1,000-3,000 on Biblio.com. Lengthier Capote inscriptions, presentation copies, or Capote's signature with co-signatures fetch even more, between $4,000-18,000.
