Anthony Susan

Susan B. Anthony ANS: "working + hoping for perfect equality of rights for women -- civil and political --"

Calling card signed by American women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony as "Susan B. Anthony" and inscribed "Rochester, N.Y., April 23/95".  Above the crisp and clean signature, Anthony has written: "Working + hoping for perfect equality of rights for women - civil and political - I am very sincerely yours …"  Minor loss/surface griminess in several spots along edges recto where card was once mounted in a scrapbook, otherwise near fine. Cream colored stock card measures 4.125" x 2.5". This thought provoking signed quote would be very handsome if framed.

A similar Anthony signed quote dates from 1901 and is in the Gilder Lehrman Collection. Written in Anthony's hand, it reads: "The one purpose of my life has been the establishment of perfect equality of rights for women – civil and political – industrial and educational … In good cheer, Susan B. Anthony, Nov. 7. 1901 -, Rochester, N.Y."

Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was a pioneer crusader of the woman's suffrage movement, the driving force behind the 19th Amendment. In the early 1890s, after over 40 years of political activism which entailed relentless travel, Anthony finally relented to move into her sister's house in Rochester, New York. The change to a permanent address did not slow down her schedule, however. She continued speaking, writing, and fundraising for numerous national and local women's suffrage organizations until her death at age 86 in 1906.

See below for some other famous Susan B. Anthony quotes:

"I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand."

"There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers."

"I do not demand equal pay for any women save those who do equal work in value. Scorn to be coddled by your employers; make them understand that you are in their service as workers, not as women."

"Trust me that as I ignore all law to help the slave, so will I ignore it all to protect an enslaved woman."

"I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires."
