In the spring of 1894, the New York Woman Suffrage Association (NYWSA) had lobbied the state of New York to amend its constitution by extending suffrage to women over the age of 21. NYWSA leaders, including Susan B. Anthony, spoke in front of the Suffrage Committee at the state's Constitutional Convention in Albany on May 24, 1894. This formal petition followed months of exhausting preparation in which NYWSA members distributed literature, collected signatures, held rallies and meetings, and fundraised. By the conclusion of the NYWSA campaign, $10,000 was raised (including Cornelia Carey's donation), and almost 600,000 signatures were collected. Even though the state later opposed the amendment, Anthony's letter makes it clear that this was only the beginning of the movement.

Jean Brooks Greenleaf (1831-1918) was the president of the NYWSA between 1890-1896. In addition to women's suffrage, Greenleaf was active in other social work. Mary Stafford Anthony (1827-1907) was Susan's younger sister and an unflagging women's rights activist in her own right. She was elected the corresponding secretary of NYWSA in 1893. Cornelia Hull Carey (1841-1907) was a lifelong Brooklynite.

Susan B. Anthony was a pioneer crusader for the woman's suffrage movement, and driving force behind the 19th amendment. Many of Anthony’s campaigns from long ago still resonate with today’s women.
