Description:

Susan B. Anthony Signed & Inscribed Envelope the Same Year the 80-Year-Old Crusader Resigned her Presidency of the National American Woman Suffrage Association

An envelope entirely engrossed by American women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906), and signed by her as "Susan B. Anthony" in the sender's address section. Anthony has written her address as "Susan B. Anthony / 17 Madison Street / Rochester N.Y.", and also added that of her recipient, "Teresa M. Kingsley / 53 Crescent Avenue / Buffalo / N.Y." Teresa's husband's name as "Com C.F. Kingsley" is also inscribed at lower left. The original transmittal envelope bears a cancelled 2 cent carmine George Washington stamp, and several hand-stamped philatelic markings. Expected weathering including an isolated water stain well outside of the writing. Letter-opened at right and top. 5.25" x 4.25".

Susan B. Anthony was one of the most influential leaders of the woman's suffrage movement, the driving force behind the 19th Amendment. In the early 1890s, after over 40 years of political activism which entailed relentless travel, Anthony finally relented to move into her sister's house in Rochester, New York. The change to a permanent address did not slow down her schedule, however; she served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association between 1892-1900. Anthony continued speaking, writing, and fundraising for numerous national and local women's suffrage organizations until her death at age 86 in 1906.

Anthony's envelope was addressed to Teresa Marie Strachan Kingsley (1868-1955), the wife of Buffalo lawyer and newspaper editor Charles Francis Kingsley (1865-1939). Kingsley owned the "Buffalo Evening News", the "Buffalo Enquirer", and the "Buffalo Review" before working primarily in New York City. Buffalo is located just 70 miles to the southwest of Rochester. Perhaps the Kingsley's were sympathetic to Anthony's cause?
