Associate Chief Justice Benjamin Cardozo (1870-1938) writes a thank you note dated November 4, 1935 from Washington, DC to author Harold Shapiro. The liberal leaning Cardozo was nominated to the Supreme Court by 31st U.S. President and Republican Herbert Hoover just three years before writing this letter. Cardozo, along with left-leaning justices Harlan Fiske Stone and Louis Brandeis, formed the "Three Musketeers" and voted in favor of many New Deal policies. From 1932 to 1937, they faced off against the "Four Horsemen", as conservative justices George Sutherland, Willis Van Devanter, James Clark McReynolds, and Pierce Butler were called. Preconceptions along with ideological differences divided the Depression-era Supreme Court; Jewish Brandeis and Cardozo sat on the same bench as their anti-Semitic fellow justice McReynolds.
