Description:

Bush George H. W. 1924 - 0 Superb displayable White House letter of Pres. Bush to a 14-year-old high school student: "I did eat Broccoli. Although I didn't like it … I always ate what my Mother served at meals. I think that's as it should be … " His distaste for broccoli became worldwide news and is almost as memorable in the Bush lexicon as "read my lips" - Broccoli growers shipped thousands of pounds of broccoli to the White House in protest.
Typed Letter Signed "George Bush" as President, 1 page, 6.75" x 8.75". On White House stationery with blind embossed presidential seal at top center. Washington, April 10, 1990. To Miss Margaret Hupt, Mobile, Alabama. Never folded. Fine condition.

In full, "Thank you for your note and the 'ban broccoli' button. I have to tell you, though, that when I was 14, I did eat broccoli. Although I didn't like it, my brothers and sister and I always ate what my Mother served at meals. I think that's as it should be. I enjoyed hearing from you and hope that our paths will cross again someday. Take care, study hard, and eat well."

The final letter "s" in "sisters" has been crossed out, undoubtedly by a presidential secretary who noticed it after Bush signed it. President Bush had three brothers (Prescott Jr., Jonathan, William), but only one sister, Nancy.

Margaret Hupt had sent President Bush a "Ban Broccoli" button.

Maureen Dowd reported in "The New York Times" on March 23, 1990, '''I do not like broccoli,' the President said, responding to queries about a broccoli ban he has imposed aboard Air Force One, first reported this week in U.S. News and World Report. 'And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States, and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli!'''
