AQS
An extraordinary autograph signed quote in English by Ivan Turgenev, neatly penned on a 4.25" x 2.25" sheet. Blind embossed paperclip impression at top right, barely discernible, otherwise in near fine condition.

Turgenev writes, in full: "Our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds. (George Eliot ‘Adam Bede') Ivan Turgenev Paris Sept. 1881."

Turgenev and Eliot shared a close friendship which began in London, 1871 and was widely-known. In 1874, Turgenev penned a letter to Eliot revealing his admiration: "I have to thank you for your very kind and most flattering letter. You may not fancy, Dear Madam, both the pleasure and pride I felt in reading it. To have written some thing approved of by George Eliot, that is to say one of the greatest and most sympathetic writers of our time — is gratifying indeed…". Two years before her death in 1880, Turgenev would raise his glass at a party in an English country house and propose a toast to Eliot: "The greatest living novelist!"

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, translator, and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. His first major publication, a short story collection entitled "A Sportsman's Sketches" (1852), was a milestone of Russian realism. His novel "Fathers and Sons" (1862) is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction.

George Eliot (1819-1880), born Mary Ann Evans, was one of the most influential writers of the Victorian era, known primarily for her durable works "Middlemarch," "Silas Marner," "Daniel Deronda" and "Adam Bede." "Adam Bede" was Eliot's first novel, was published in three volumes in 1859. The novel tells the tale of a virtuous carpenter, Adam Bede, and his unrequited love for Hetty Sorrel, a very young and beautiful girl who becomes entangled in a forbidden romance and ensuing pregnancy. Although Bede tries to help her, he eventually loses her but finds happiness with someone else.
