Description:

Superb Signed Einstein Photo to Woman of Nuclear Policy Fame

Albert Einstein (1879-1955). An 8" x 10" photograph signed and inscribed by the famous scientist,"To Mrs Lenore Marshall A. Einstein 54", in lower margin. Pinholes and minor blemishes at border from proud display, mentioned only for accuracy. One of the finest we have seen. The last similarly superb signed image of Einstein fetched over $58,000 at RR Auction very recently. This has not been on the auction market before and to our knowledge, it has seen very little light of day for the past 70 years.

In this profile bust portrait by Trude Fleischmann, Einstein holds his pipe to his mouth - although he had given up smoking three years earlier at the request of his physician, Dr. Rudolf Ehrmann. Einstein continued to carry the pipe, and would pose with it for photographs in later life; characteristically casually dressed with long, slightly unkempt hair.

Lenore Guinzberg Marshall (1899-1971) was an American author and anti-nuclear activist. She was a member and director of PEN, the Poetry Society of America, Pen and Brush, the Authors’ League, and the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Marshall’s political activism was as important to her career as her literary accomplishments. A member of the Post-War World Council from 1940 to 1962, Marshall expressed profound concerns for the fate of humanity in the wake of world war. Marshall co-founded the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy in 1956 and was the founding co-director of the Committee for Nuclear Responsibility in 1971. Her papers are housed at the Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Columbia University.

Trude Fleischmann (1895-1990) was an Austrian-born American photographer. After becoming a notable society photographer in Vienna in the 1920s, she was forced to flee after the Anschluss of 1938. She settled in New York, where she re-established her business near Carnegie Hall. Along with scenes of New York City, Fleischmann photographed celebrities and notable immigrants, which in addition to Einstein, included Otto von Habsburg, Oskar Kokoschka, Arturo Toscanini and Eleanor Roosevelt.
