Hugo Blacks TLS to Harold Shapiro is shown in full below:

"June 26, 1961

Dear Mr. Shapiro

Thanks for sending reprint of the poem "The Six Million Speak". The poem is very touching description of one of the world's most tragic programs and you were right in thinking I would read it with interest.

With king regards, I am

Sincerely

Hugo L. Black"

A fascinating letter from Black with substantial important references of the holocaust, a period of severe prejudice/oppression and annihilation and ethnic cleansing.

Black became known for his steadfast devotion to and literal interpretation of the U.S. Constitution as well as rulings that would overall be considered liberal, though markedly non-progressive ideology could also be found.

A perfect letter which resonates with many underlying currents.
