A superb Grant family portrait taken in Mount McGregor New York shortly before Grant's death in July 1885.

ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822-1885) An imperial mounted albumen photograph, 9" x 10.75", taken of the former President and General of the Army with his family shortly before his death on July 23, 1885. Minor loss at upper right corner, else fine.

In this photograph, a clearly ailing Grant is surrounded by his family, including his wife Julia Dent Grant, his sons, Frederick Dent Grant, Ulysses S. Grant, Jr., and Jesse Root Grant, as well as his daughter Nellie Grant. Seated on the steps are Frederick Dent Grant's wife, Ida Marie Honoré (1854-1930), and their children, Julia Dent Cantacuzène Spiransky-Grant (1876-1975) and Ulysses S. Grant III (1881-1968). Seated just to the left is Ulysses S. Grant, Jr's wife Fannie Josephine Chaffee (1857-1909) and their eldest daughter Miriam Grant (b.1881).

Grant spent the final six weeks of his life at Joseph R. Drexel's Adirondack cottage in June and July of 1885, completing his memoirs.
