Description:

Pierce Franklin 1804 - 1869 Superb Franklin Pierce Free Franked Envelope

Envelope Free Franked "Franklin Pierce," 5.25 inches by 2.75 inches, slit open at top. Circular "Andover Ms May 13 1865" and "FREE" postmarks. Addressed by Pierce to "Rev H. Slicer / chaplain of 'Semen's [sic]Union / Bethel Society' / Baltimore /Md." Minor flaws on verso. Fine condition.

Methodist minister Rev. Henry Slicer (1801-1874) was Chaplain of the Seamen's Union Bethel Society in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1862-1870. He had served as Chaplain of the U.S. Senate three times, from 1837-1839 during Pierce's term in the Senate, 1846-1850, and 1853-1855 during the Pierce presidency.

On January 6, 1853, after spending the holidays in Andover, Massachusetts, with wife Jane Pierce's sister and brother-in-law, President-elect Franklin Pierce, Jane, their 11-year-old son Benjamin, and brother-in-law Alpheus Packard left Andover by train for the Pierce's home in Concord, N.H. The trip was to be their last before they left for Washington and his Inauguration. Less than a mile from the Andover station, the train derailed and tumbled down an embankment. Their son Bennie, their only surviving child, was the only one killed. Their two other sons had died at three days old (1836) and four-years-old (1843). Jane Mans Appleton Pierce died in Andover on December 2, 1863.

Franklin Pierce was most probably visiting his wife's family in Andover when he franked this envelope. His wife Jane was staying with her sister Mary Aiken when she died in Andover in 1863.
