Superb "Buffalo Bill" Oversize Photograph with Lakota Indian Chiefs
Photograph
A superb oversize photograph showing William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody with 14 Lakota Chiefs (Brule´, Miniconjou, and Oglala) as well as two U.S. Officials, standing outside a tepee at Pine Ridge, South Dakota on January 16, 1891. This striking image measures 12.75" x 10.25" and is matted to overall dimensions of 14" x 11". It was produced by J. C. H. Gabrill with the studios's information printed in gilt type at right margin. Two holes at top from prior display, otherwise in very good condition.

An identification label in the negative at bottom left reads: "No. 38801 Indian Chiefs and Officials," and lists the names of each of the Chiefs.

William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody opened his eponymous show in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1883. Dubbed "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" and led by the charismatic showman, the show dazzled American and European crowds alike for more than 30 years. Cody drew upon his real life adventures, turning them into heightened spectacles for the public. The open-air shows depicted cowboys, Native Americans, army scouts, outlaws, and wild beasts, with most sketches being sensationalized. Performers like Sitting Bull and Calamity Jane reenacted famous events, staged stunts and tricks, raced on horseback, and circled their Conestoga wagons on demand. In the context of the show, Cody usually cultivated an image of the rough-riding frontiersman. In 1893, Cody changed the show's name to "Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World," and the show performed at the Chicago World's Fair to a crowd of 18,000.

William "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917) was an American frontiersman who became the penultimate symbol of the American frontier and ignited a fervor about the Western Frontier. A Union soldier in the Civil War, Pony Express rider, scout, Indian fighter, and professional hunter, he frequently took dangerous assignments that others refused. Cody allegedly earned his moniker "Buffalo Bill" by the ease with which he slayed thousands of the beasts of the Plains. He received the Medal of Honor in 1872.
