Superb Benjamin Harrison signed cabinet card




C.M. Gilbert Studios (926 Chestnut St., Phila.) cabinet card photograph of Benjamin Harrison signed "Benj Harrison" in black ink along bottom, circa 1897. Sepia tone photograph shows 23 rd U.S. President in ¾ profile seated in double-breasted black suit with checked buttons. Photographic studio name, heraldic crest logo, and address run along bottom front and also along a diagonal verso. Dated May 28, 1897 in pen in upper left corner verso. In very fine to extra fine condition, 4.25" x 6.5". Four light paper abrasions verso where card was once affixed in scrapbook, and one tiny chip at bottom left corner verso.

Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was the grandson of 9 th U.S. President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). The younger Harrison served during the Civil War, seeing action in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, and eventually reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. After the war, Harrison became increasingly interested in state politics. He transitioned into the national political arena as a U.S. Senator in the 1880s. Harrison was the Republican presidential candidate in 1888, serving one term in between Democratic Grover S. Cleveland's two terms. In 1897, when this card was hand inscribed, Harrison was serving on the Board of Trustees of Purdue University.
