Lee Robert 1807 - 1870 Stunning Robert E. Lee boldly signed carte-de-visite photograph

Superb carte-de-visite bust Photograph Signed "R.E. Lee" on the image surface. Sepia, 2.25" x 3.5" image affixed to 2.5" x 4.25" photographer's card. Pristine condition.

Photographer's imprint on verso: "Boude & Miley, / Lexington, / Va." Penciled on verso in upper area: "Lexington, Va. / 20th June 1870." In ink beneath imprint is penned: "Lexington Va. / 20th June 1870." Dates in unknown hand. A few scattered ink marks near blank edge on verso.

This photograph was taken at the studio of Boude & Miley by photographer Michael Miley (1841-1918), a veteran of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. In 1866, the 25-year-old photographer partnered with businessman John C. Boude to open a studio at the corner of Main and Nelson Streets in Lexington, Virginia. In 1870, Miley purchased Boude's half of the business. Miley took many photographs of Robert E. Lee and his family, the most famous one being Robert E. Lee on his war horse Traveller. Less than four months after he signed this photograph, on October 12, 1870, General Robert E. Lee died in Lexington, Virginia.
