Description:

Queen Elena of Montenegro
n.p., n.d.
Stunning Photo of Queen Elena of Montenegro, in Heavy Silver Period Frame!
Signed photograph
An exquisite photograph of Elena in gown, pearls and a gorgeous crown, standing full-length with a feathered fan in hand. Measures 5.5" x 8.75" sepia, mounted and boldly signed at lower margin. A few light scuffs at top left corner, well-clear of her image. Mounted to a slightly larger sheet with deckled edges. The photograph can be easily re-mounted with excellent results.

Offered with an incredible rarity, the probable original .800 silver frame, with original (stained) mat present (no glass). This beautiful frame is a display-worthy 12.66" x 17" size with the silver border nearly 2" wide. It is hallmarked on one side with the maker's mark and ".800" for silver content. Accented with a gold-tone, dimensional crown at top which is a bit loose but easily remedied. In need of cleaning and polishing to bring it back to its true glory. We believe that the frame alone has a value of hundreds of dollars for silver content alone!

The verso bears indications that this is a period and possibly original frame: comprised of lacquered wood with a hinged strip for display on a flat surface, it bears a copper or brass plaque reading: "Fratelli Cagli Giolelleri Roma [Cagli Brothers Jewelers, Rome]".

Elena of Montenegro (1873-1952), more commonly known as Queen Elena of Italy, was the daughter of King Nicholas I of Montenegro and his wife, Milena Vukotic. She married Victor Emanuele III in 1900, and reigned until Victor's abdication in 1946. Elena was loved by the population for her strong family values, charitable work, and quiet, unpretentious elegance.
