A beige canvas tote bag emblazoned with the STS-1 mission patch, "Columbia / Young - Crippen / Johnson Space Center / Houston, Texas," boldly signed in black felt tip pen by four NASA astronauts: Richard Covey, Michael Coats, Ron McNair, and Judith Resnik, the last two killed during the "Challenger" disaster in 1986. N.d. but probably ca. 1981, around the same time that Commander John W. Young and Pilot Robert Crippen undertook the STS-1 space mission. N.p. An ownership signature as "Judith Ludwig" is pen-inscribed along the top edge of the inside of the tote bag. Expected surface wear including minor soiling particularly to the handles, base, and back. Scattered stains and scuff marks, else very good. The bag measures approximately 13.5" x 12.25" excluding the handles (with handles about 13.5" x 15.5.") Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from Zarelli Space Authentication (Ballston Lake, New York), serial number Z008207, dated March 1, 2025.

The astronaut signers include, in alphabetical order:

1. Michael Coats (born 1946), signed as "Mike Coats / NASA Astronaut" in the upper right corner. Coats undertook three space missions (STS-41-D, 1984; STS-29, 1989, and STS-39, 1991), with over 19 days clocked in space.

2. Richard Covey (born 1946), signed as "Dick Covey / NASA Astronaut" in the upper left corner. A career NASA astronaut, Covey participated in four space missions (STS-51-I, 1985; STS-26, 1988; STS-38, 1990; and STS-61, 1993), spending over 26 days in space.

3. Ronald McNair (1950-1986), the second Black American to fly in space, signed as "Ron McNair / NASA Astronaut" in the lower left corner. McNair spent over 7 days in space during the 1984 STS-41-B space mission. McNair was a mission specialist aboard STS-51-L and was one of seven crewmembers killed during the "Challenger" disaster on January 28, 1986.

4. Judith Resnik (1949-1986), the second American woman and first Jewish woman to fly in space, signed as "Judy Resnik / NASA Astronaut" in the lower right corner. Resnik completed over 6 days in space aboard STS-41-D in 1984. McNair's fellow mission specialist, she was killed during the "Challenger" disaster as well.

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
