Archive

Striking framed display of signatures and rare artifacts from the Senate impeachment trials of Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, drawing a powerful parallel between two of the most consequential constitutional crises in American history. Matted in brown and set into a carved wood frame measuring 39" x 30". Frame bears a bit of wear; items are not examined out of frame.

The left side of the display focuses on the 1868 impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, and includes:

An original issue of the New-York Tribune, dated February 25, 1868, covering the impeachment proceedings against Johnson in full contemporary detail.

A gorgeous, bold example of President Andrew Johnson signature, inscribed "Greenville, TN."

A short ALS written by Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, who presided over the Senate trial.

A rare Senate Gallery admission ticket to Johnson's impeachment trial dated May 11, 1868.

A printed portrait of Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, who presided over the Senate trial.

The right side of the frame turns to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, and features:

A historic New York Times front page, dated December 20, 1998, bearing the bold headline "CLINTON IMPEACHED."

An original Senate impeachment trial ticket, dated January 23, 1999: On January 23, 1999, President Bill Clinton's legal team concluded their opening arguments in the Senate impeachment trial, asserting that the charges did not meet the constitutional threshold for removal from office. They emphasized that the president's conduct, while inappropriate, did not constitute "high crimes and misdemeanors" as defined by the Constitution.

A typed letter signed by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who presided over Clinton's Senate trial in his role as Chief Justice of the United States. Dated April 27, 1999, the letter references the Chief Justice's duties during the proceedings.

This framed display presents a rare side-by-side archive of two presidential impeachment trials—those of Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999—offering a powerful lens into how the nation has confronted constitutional crisis across centuries. Both trials tested the limits of executive accountability, unfolding in deeply polarized political climates. Johnson's trial, set against the turmoil of Reconstruction, ended with acquittal by a single vote, preserving the fragile balance between Congress and the presidency. Clinton's trial, centered on personal misconduct, reignited national debate over the threshold for impeachment but ultimately reaffirmed the high bar for removal from office. Together, these trials reflect the enduring tension between law, politics, and the presidency in American democracy. This display showcases many of the key relics and figures who shaped both trials.
