Archive

Civil War Sheet Music, 5 pieces, ca. 1861-1865, with each offering a unique glimpse into the patriotic fervor, military triumphs, and cultural sentiment of the time. The pieces showcase a combination of stirring compositions and striking visual artwork. Some unbound or disbound, generally moderate wear, foxing and fraying. See photos for details.

The collection includes:

"Volunteer Polka," composed by Robert Goldbeck, is a patriotic Civil War-era composition published by Horace Waters of New York. The cover features striking black-and-white lithography depicting an American eagle clutching a banner above crossed U.S. flags, surrounded by elaborate scrollwork. Symbolic of Union fervor and volunteer enlistment, the sheet remains well-preserved with minor toning and edge wear, still firmly attached.

"Dixie for the Union," words by Frances J. Crosby, melody by Dan D. Emmett, reclaims the Southern anthem in support of the Union cause. Published by Firth, Pond & Co. in New York, the sheet displays a vibrant cover with twin American flags and ornate red framing. It stands out for its rare lyrical reinterpretation by Crosby, one of the most prolific hymn writers in American history. The piece is complete and intact with visible age wear and staining.

"Major General Sherman's Grand Triumphal March," composed by R. Mack, honors the famed Union general William T. Sherman and his military victories. Published by Lee & Walker in Philadelphia, the cover features a sepia-toned lithographic portrait of Sherman in uniform beneath a decorative arch of flags and armaments. The sheet retains strong visual clarity and remains attached, bearing signs of light foxing and corner wear.

"Drums & Trumpets, or Parade in Broadway," composed by F. B. Helmsmüller, captures the patriotic spirit of the 7th and 22nd Regiments of the New York State Militia. Issued by Firth, Pond & Co., this color lithograph cover bursts with detail, showing drums, bugles, and flags amidst a military camp backdrop. The vibrant imagery and period typography make this a visually rich and evocative piece, showing minor wear and edge creases.

"Maj. Anderson's Quick Step," composed by Steph. Glover, pays tribute to Major Robert Anderson, Union hero of Fort Sumter. Published by Oliver Ditson & Co. in Boston, the cover presents a finely engraved portrait of Anderson surrounded by patriotic flourishes and wreaths. Though bearing a large ink stain and stamped notations, the sheet remains complete and historically resonant, indicative of early Civil War sentiment.
